7 Reasons Why You Should Increase Your Pricing

Quickly…

I was happy to be one of the instructors last week at the Maternity and Newborn Photographer’s Summit in Dallas, TX.

In fact, the entire weekend it was a blast!

In my class, we explored how to use AI to help automate landing new clients all the way through getting 5-star reviews and referrals.

More on that coming soon!

Sean Teaching at Maternity Newborn Summit

From $250 to $2500 overnight…

In my class, we discussed Lindsay, a maternity & newborn photographer in the DFW area. (Lindsay also happened to be in the audience).

Lindsay started off her career doing amazing work and working super hard.

Basically, she’d take on anyone who said they needed photography.

But at the end of the year, she realized that even though she’d worked super hard (& missed dinners & soccer games with her family), she’d only made a net profit of around $400.

Not great.

So she made a change.

Instead of being a “shoot and burn” photographer, she upped her prices. By a factor of 10.

So she went from charging $250 for all the digital files to $2,500.

Overnight.

Pretty great, right?

The rest is history as Lindsay is now a very talented and sought after luxury maternity and newborn photographer.

Moral of the story?

To inspire you to increase your prices! In fact, below are 7 reasons why!

With Lindsay’s example in mind, here are some reasons to inspire you to charge more!

#1 – Attract Higher-Value Clients

Luxury pricing signals exclusivity and attracts clients who value quality, experience, and are willing to invest in premium products.

This leads to a more fulfilling clientele who appreciate your artistry and are less likely to haggle over prices (hint: they’re just plain more enjoyable to work with!)

#2 – Increase Profitability

Higher prices mean higher profit margins per client, allowing you to earn more while potentially working with fewer clients.

This leads to a more sustainable and less stressful business model.

#3 – Enhance Perceived Value

Luxury pricing elevates the perceived value of your work. Clients often associate higher prices with superior quality.

This means they’re more likely to cherish and invest in your products when they perceive them as exclusive.

I’ve heard a number of stories where clients went with the more expensive photographer because they thought they were going to get better results.

#4 – Cover Business Costs and Investments

Higher prices can help cover the costs of running a high-end photography business, including premium equipment, studio space, and continuing education (like summits)!

Also, with more money in the bank, you can ramp up your advertising and marketing efforts and book even more high-end clients.

#5 – Focus on Quality over Quantity

Luxury pricing allows you to dedicate more time and attention to each client, providing a truly personalized experience. And it’s ALL about the experience.

This can lead to greater client satisfaction, stronger relationships, more of those 5-star reviews, and way more referrals.

#6 – Differentiate Yourself from the Competition

The luxury market is less saturated than the general portrait photography market.

This means you can stand out and become a sought-after expert in your niche.

In fact, you might even be the only luxury photographer in your local market – that’s a good thing!

There will always be people who want the best and they use that dollar sign as a key indicator of that.

#7 – Become Recession-Proof

This one is tricky. With how crazy everything is right now, nobody knows what our future holds.

But one thing remains constant – luxury clientele aren’t hit as hard by a slow down in the market.

When other photographers (who are charging “cheaper” prices) can’t find clients, you keep on trucken’ with your high-end clients.

I know this can seem scary, especially if you’ve never increased your price. But, it will help you, your studio, and your sanity!

Also, it helps the industry overall as more people are made aware of the fine art nature of luxury photography.

Apply this to Your Studio:

#1 – Crunch the numbers:

Calculate your business expenses, then determine your ideal profit margin.

Then just factor that into your pricing.

#2 – Elevate your brand:

Take some time to consider how you can create a high-end studio identity (your brand) with your best work, overall aesthetics, and offerings.

If you need a model, I’m sure you know of a photographer who’s brand & style you admire.

You can emulate them while enhancing your own personal vision.

#3 – Curate a premium experience and products:

As part of your new brand and offer, be sure to highlight the unique value and experience that justifies your new premium pricing.

Also, be sure to offer top-quality prints, albums, & wall art that complement your style.

Also, remember to offer any personalized services that add value & exclusivity to your packages.
